Visit Our Galena Illinois Log Cabins Eco-Friendly Retreat!
The Nature Conservancy has joined the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in adopting
the following definition of eco tourism:
"Environmentally responsible travel to natural areas, in order
to enjoy and appreciate nature (and accompanying cultural features, both past
and present) that promote conservation, have a low visitor impact and provide
for beneficially active socioeconomic involvement of local peoples."
So we've been making changes 'round the farm to make less
of an impact on the environment.
- Our firewood is from fallen trees and lumber business remnants. We also offer
Duraflame logs,
which are now all natural and burn 66% cleaner & use 80%
fewer resources than firewood.
- We use all natural, biodegradable laundry soap and line dry
the linens as much as possible.
- Our cleaning supplies are all natural, plant-based, biodegradable and
chemical-free.
- We source our bakery goods locally, at Klein's Market, which uses all natural
ingredients.
- We are avid recyclers and composters and have a recycling bin in each cabin.
- Our toilet
paper and tissues come from 100% recycled fibers/40% post consumer waste that
is processed chlorine-free and is Green Seal certified.
- Our soap is 100% natural with recycled paper wrappers each bar saves 1 acre of Rainforest for 1 yr.
- We've installed Low Flow Showerheads in each cabin & the Coach House.
- We've installed Low Flow Dual Flush toilets in each cabin.
- When not in use we turn the log cabins' thermostats way down to conserve
energy.
- Our washer/dryer is Energy Star® and we wash in cold water using Silver
Care® sanitation.
- We conserve water by washing linens every four days instead of daily during
long stays.
- We have replaced all lights with compact fluorescent bulbs. We also
use solar path lighting.
- We have a single well that supplies fresh water to our Galena log cabins,
therefore chemicals
aren't needed to for sanitation. - Our utilities lines run underground.
Our master eco-plan also includes implementing wind and solar power to meet
our year-round energy needs.
As we are highly committed to preserving the environment if you have any
suggestions to help us lessen our log cabin's impact on the planet please
let us know!
